Last month, Sue Jones officially unveiled a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Harwood Golf Club. This is her fifth device bought from her fundraising endeavours.
It follows the tragic passing of her husband Terry, who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing golf in 2022. Since then, she has placed AEDs at Davyhulme, Runcorn, Great Lever and Farnworth and Sale golf courses. She has raised more than £6,500, partially by raffling rounds of golf, donated by clubs, to members of the public.
Sue says, “I’m really humbled by all the support I’ve had, and to have raised this amount of money is fantastic.
“Golf was Terry’s passion so to provide these defibs in his name is fabulous. When Terry suffered his cardiac arrest, a defib from the golf course was used in an attempt to save him. While sadly it wasn’t enough, I’m left with no doubt that everything was done to help him, which brings me a lot of comfort.”
This has been done with the support of North West Ambulance Charity. Who helped with the purchase and installation of the equipment.
Charity Fundraising Manager Roya Armstrong says, “We’re so grateful for the support Sue has shown us. Over the last two years, North West Ambulance Charity has funded nearly £700,000 to projects like this, aimed at saving lives in the community.
“We’ve bought more than 300 defibs like this, and in addition helped keep others active and available by supplying replacement batteries and pads, so they are ready to be used in an emergency.
Defibrillators like the ones installed by Sue can shock someone’s heartbeat back into a normal rhythm if they are in cardiac arrest, potentially saving their life. They also can be used by anyone, without training, as instructions are given as you use the device.
Howard Nicholson, Captain of Harwood Golf Club said, “The Club is proud to partner with Sue Jones and North West Ambulance Charity to provide this vital lifesaving defibrillator.”
Helen Radcliffe, Lady Captain of Harwood Golf Club said, “This vital piece of equipment is available for use by club members and visitors and also importantly, available to members of our local community who will all have access twenty-four hours a day.”
